ALL SAILS SET II This installation was created in 2009 for the project Chemin d’Iris 2 for the Paul Gauguin Cultural Center in Alençon. The work was conceived around the themes of femininity and freedom. In french the word «le voile», (masculine) signifies «a covering, to hide from view” as used by numerous religious orders. However «la voile» (feminine) signifies the sail of a yacht. To best express these themes, I chose eighteen voile 220x110cm to be hung in two rows in the arcade around the courtyard of the Museum of Fine Art and Lace in Alençon. The first row, black voile with white paint, depicts my contact with the public. The second row, white voile with black paint represents my personal response to that contact. The realisation of this work started with a tiny atelier in a caravan, positioned in two different locations in Alençon. A collaboration with the public began, I interviewed over 60 people who generously shared, their ideas on femininity and their hands for me to adorn with henna. This ancient technique from Mesopotamia has direct relevance with the international and historical reputation of Alençon : lace making. Both adornments leave parts of the skin visible thanks to their open graphic trace : The hands were then photographed, printed on fabric, cut and collaged onto the black voile, adding to the many painted symbols of the collective response to femininity. As black exists with white, my response and artistic statement on the white voile is to call for a rebalancing by de-emphasing the masculine «le voile» and to emphasise – bring forth the feminine «la voile» that is, to set sail with complete freedom, toward an increased sense of Liberty.

FINERY The performance «Adornment» was staged in 2009 at the Museum of Fine Art and Lace of Alençon during the opening night of «All sails set II» which was created for «Chemin d’Iris N°2». This event portrayed the previous encounters between the Elisa Fiasca and the women of Alençon, with origins from both the east and the west. At the center of the performance Marie Noëlle Deverre, artist and costume maker symbolises the bringing together of these two worlds, the adornments of lace and of hennaed skin. Isa Paré, Lace Maker at the conservation section (on left) constructs a web of thread on the gloved hand of Marie-Noëlle while her bare hand is painted with henna by Elisa (on the right). The public was later invited to leave their own traces of henna or thread.
